Glycerites
🌿 Basic Glycerite-Making Instructions (Folk Method)
✅ Supplies Needed:
- Fresh or dried herbs
- Vegetable glycerin (food-grade)
- Distilled water (if using dried herbs)
- Glass jar with lid (Mason jars work well)
- Cheesecloth or fine strainer
- Amber glass bottles (for storage)
- Label and marker
🌿 Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prepare the Herb
- Fresh herbs: Chop finely.
- Dried herbs: Crush slightly to increase surface area.
2. Make Your Glycerin Base
- For dried herbs, mix:
- 60% glycerin
- 40% distilled water
- For fresh herbs, use 100% glycerin (they contain their own water).
3. Fill Your Jar
- Fill:
- Fresh herbs: ⅔ to ¾ full
- Dried herbs: ½ full
- Pour glycerin (or your glycerin/water mix) over herbs to completely cover.
- Leave at least 1 inch of headspace.
- Stir or shake to remove air bubbles.
- Seal tightly.
4. Label and Store
- Label with:
- Herb name
- Date
- Glycerin/water ratio
- Store in a cool, dark place for 4–6 weeks.
- Shake daily or every few days.
5. Strain and Bottle
- After 4–6 weeks, strain through cheesecloth.
- Squeeze out all liquid.
- Bottle in amber dropper bottles.
📌 Usage and Shelf Life:
- Typical dose: 1–2 dropperfuls (30–60 drops), 2–3 times daily.
- Shelf life: about 1–2 years if stored in a cool, dark place.
