Oxymels
🍯 Basic Oxymel-Making Instructions (Folk Method)
✅ Supplies Needed:
- Fresh or dried herbs
- Raw apple cider vinegar (with the “mother”)
- Raw honey
- Glass jar with lid (Mason jars work well)
- Cheesecloth or fine strainer
- Amber bottles or jars for storage
- Label and marker
🌿 Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prepare the Herb
- Fresh herbs: Chop finely.
- Dried herbs: Crush slightly to release active compounds.
2. Fill Your Jar
- Fill:
- Fresh herbs: ½ to ¾ of the jar
- Dried herbs: ⅓ to ½ of the jar
3. Add Vinegar and Honey
- Use a ratio of 1 part honey to 2–3 parts vinegar (adjust to taste).
- Example: For 1 cup total liquid, use ⅓ cup honey and ⅔ cup vinegar.
- Pour the mixture over the herbs, fully covering them.
- Stir well to combine.
- Leave at least 1 inch of headspace.
- Seal the jar. If using a metal lid, place parchment paper between the lid and the vinegar to prevent corrosion.
4. Infuse
- Label with:
- Herb name
- Date
- Ratio of vinegar to honey
- Store in a cool, dark place for 2–4 weeks.
- Shake daily or every few days.
5. Strain and Bottle
- Strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.
- Squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
- Store in amber bottles or jars.
📌 Usage and Shelf Life:
- Shelf life: ~6–12 months (vinegar and honey are natural preservatives)
- Dosage: 1–2 teaspoons daily, straight or diluted in water or tea
